What's Happening in the classroom

In English!

The 8th graders just finished a successful unit on The Outsiders. The kids really enjoyed the book, and we are excited to see their final projects.

The 10th graders are woking hard on their first research paper using MLA formatting. They're getting a taste of what college papers will look like.

7th grade Geography!

Geography students researched the Three Gorges Dam in China.  It is the worlds largest hydroelectric project found on the Yangtze River (3rd longest in the world). They used iPads to find the information and then wrote a 4 paragraph paper contrasting the human and environmental costs and benefits of the immense dam project.

Careers

This year, Shoshone High, has implemented a freshman career class (High School 101).  Our class includes units on Learning and Personality Styles, Career Research, and How to get and keep a job.  As part of our career research unit, students have been visiting local businesses.  So far, we have visited Twin Falls Fire Department, JUB Engineering, Head Start, Idaho State Police Department in Jerome, Fish and Game,Band BLM.  In the near future, they will be touring St. Luke's in Twin Falls.  The students have really enjoyed visiting the various businesses and are getting some great career ideas.
This picture is from the Fire Department.  Hanna Caylor was chosen to suit up in the 60 pounds of equipment that the fire fighters wear.  While there, the students got to watch as the firemen were
called out to an emergency.  They were amazed to see the men suit up and leave in less than a minute!

Basket Buddies Event

The Middle Schoolers had a great event on Thursday. Twelve student volunteers, anonymously made lunch baskets to be bid on my their fellow classmates. The winning bid got to share the lunch with the lunch maker. The basket buddies idea came from an experience read about by some middle school students in their Language Arts class. The goal of the event was to find new and fun ways for kids get to know someone they would not ordinarily spent time with. Lunch Baskets contained things ranging from steak and potatoes to deli sandwiches with soda pop or sparkling cider and fresh homemade cookies to fruit leather.
The students seemed to be reluctant to participate but... after the assembly and lunch were over, students were talking about next time!!!
The event was planned by the Middle School Student Council under the direction of Mrs. Sant.

8-9.ES.1.2.2 Develop models to explain concepts or systems.

Classroom teachers and the ISAT prep teams developed goals for each student in all subject areas. Check out how your child has done the last two years and where we expect them to be this year! Goals are ambitious and achievable. Ask your child about the goals and how they are going to achieve them!

Distracted Driving

High School students attend an assembly 10 days ago on distracted driving. All the students took a survey before going to the assembly.

DOES YOUR STUDENT DRIVE DISTRACTED??? Here are the overall results. 82% of students reported that they use their cellphone when driving while 18% indicated that they did not use their cell phone when driving. 57% students reported that they text when they drive while 43% indicated that they did not text when driving. As such it appears that 57% of the students both use their cell phone and text when driving.

The assembly was based on an actual case that occurred in August of 2008 involving two boys, both named Trevor. There was a rollover accident and the passenger Trevor was killed and Trevor the driver was charged with Vehicular Manslaughter. When it came time for sentencing Judge Borresen noticed that the young men were“poster” young men who were excellent students, active in school activities and sports. Therefore, Judge Borresen wanted to try to get a message out to young people about the dangers of distracted driving.

The students of SHS watched a video. The first part of the video shows some forms of distracted driving and then we tried to replicate the accident scene where one young man dies and the other is taken to the hospital. The second part includes all of the interviews from first responders, law enforcement, prosecution, defense attorney, the court as well as both sets of parents and Trevor talk about this tragic incident.

Student of the Week!

Magic Valley Times News Honors Scott Kerner!

Scott, a junior, has a gift: He can draw what he sees. Put a pencil in his hand, give him an interesting photo or still life, come back an hour later and you will marvel at Scott’s gift. He is motivated, almost driven, to create. He can do amazing things with shading using pencils. His rendering skills are excellent and he can work in any medium with pleasing results. The staff and students of Shoshone are always amazed at the quality of his artwork.

Teacher Professional Development

Friday teachers spent time learning about "Blended Learning"; ways to use further technology into the classroom. The "Students Come First" law, is being discussed in legistration this year anf it will give more regulation about online learning to school districts in the classrooms. As of right now, 1/3 of all high school students in the State of Idaho will receive Laptops in the coming school year. It has not been determined if Shoshone is part of the 1/3.
Friday afternoon, teachers reviewed all middle school students' data to set ISAT goals for this spring. The data taken into consideration was last years' ISAT scores, Plato benchmark testing, Aimsweb data and classroom assessments.
In the coming weeks, check your mail to see your own students data and their ISAT goals.

Meet Fredrik !!!

Foreign and Royal for the Day
By Kenya Lewis
Warwhoops! Reporter

SHOSHONE- Fredrick Tveitnes is a foreign exchange student from Norway. “I’ve always dreamed of coming to America, and I saw this as an opportunity.” Tveitnes states.
Fredrick lives in a city the west coast of Norway. For his time in Idaho he is staying with Darren and Amy Taber and will only be here for ten months.
Since Tveitnes has been in America, he has tried many new foods, as well as football, basketball and horseback riding.
According to Tveitnes, he doesn’t have horses in Norway because, “I live in the neighborhood.” He says he was interested in coming to America because of the movie “Dances With Wolves,” and while he would like to see New York and LA, he is more interested in the Great Plains and the buffalo
Some major differences are the heat and the language. “I didn’t know there was 90 degrees Fahrenheit.” He says, and adds with a grin “we use Celsius in Norway.” With summer winding down and winter quickly approaching, Idaho is preparing to show him just how cold it can be.
In describing his home country, he says: “it’s colder and they speak Norwegian.” At home he enjoys sailing in the fjords, hiking, and seafood.
In Norway they celebrate many of the same holidays Americans do, including Christmas and Easter.
During his stay in Shoshone, Tveitnes is taking U.S. History, Band, English, Floral, Physics, Algebra II, Art and Academic Decathlon. He did well in his first decathlon meet including earning an award in the speech competition
In reply to an inquiry as to whether being a foreign exchange student is a difficult process, Tveitnes says, “No, not yet. The most difficult part is the language.”
Tveitnes seems to be popular so far at SHS, already having made many friends and been selected as Junior Class Homecoming Royalty. He has been on the football team, the basketball team and the Decathlon team. “Everyone wants a Norwegian on the team.” He says with a grin.
