IELA Testing??

IELA Testing (Idaho English Language Assessment): what is it? All students with a native language other than English must take the IELA until they are identified as Fluent. Students are tested in four areas: speaking, listening, reading comprehension and writing.
The assessment is done during the school day in small group and individual testing sessions. For more information, contact the MS/HS office.

Distracted Driving

High School students attend an assembly 10 days ago on distracted driving. All the students took a survey before going to the assembly.

DOES YOUR STUDENT DRIVE DISTRACTED??? Here are the overall results. 82% of students reported that they use their cellphone when driving while 18% indicated that they did not use their cell phone when driving. 57% students reported that they text when they drive while 43% indicated that they did not text when driving. As such it appears that 57% of the students both use their cell phone and text when driving.

The assembly was based on an actual case that occurred in August of 2008 involving two boys, both named Trevor. There was a rollover accident and the passenger Trevor was killed and Trevor the driver was charged with Vehicular Manslaughter. When it came time for sentencing Judge Borresen noticed that the young men were“poster” young men who were excellent students, active in school activities and sports. Therefore, Judge Borresen wanted to try to get a message out to young people about the dangers of distracted driving.

The students of SHS watched a video. The first part of the video shows some forms of distracted driving and then we tried to replicate the accident scene where one young man dies and the other is taken to the hospital. The second part includes all of the interviews from first responders, law enforcement, prosecution, defense attorney, the court as well as both sets of parents and Trevor talk about this tragic incident.
